Where to Find and How to Install Fibreglass Pool Tissue Mosaic Borders and Motifs
A plain fibreglass pool can look clean and practical, but a printed mosaic border or motif gives it that finished “wow” factor. Mosaic tissue sheets are especially useful on the waterline, pool steps and edge areas where you want better visibility, a decorative finish, or a smart way to hide waterline marks over time.
At Swemgat, pool owners, DIY renovators and pool builders can buy fibreglass pool mosaic tissue sheets, printed borders, motifs and the fibreglass materials needed to install them correctly.

Motifs can be used to create a feature inside the pool, on a step, on a shallow area, or as part of a full pool renovation. They are ideal when you want the pool to look less ordinary and more personal.
What are fibreglass tissue mosaic sheets?
Fibreglass mosaic tissue sheets are printed decorative sheets designed for resin-based fibreglass pool linings or epoxy-painted fibreglass surfaces. They are thin, flexible and installed into the pool coating system, almost like a decoupage process, but for swimming pools.
They are commonly used for:
- Waterline borders
- Step edges
- Shallow pool areas
- Decorative motifs
- Hiding scum marks and stains at the waterline
- Making underwater steps easier to see
They are not the same as ceramic mosaics. They do not require tile adhesive or grout.
Important: where not to use them
Fibreglass pool tissue sheets are not for direct use on concrete, cement or marblite surfaces.
They must be applied over a suitable fibreglass pool lining or compatible epoxy-painted fibreglass surface. If you have a concrete or marblite pool, the surface must first be prepared and lined with fibreglass before these mosaic tissue sheets are installed.
For a complete fibreglass relining project, Swemgat supplies a material kit for pools up to about 65m²:
Material Kit: Fibreglass lining for 4m x 8m concrete swimming pools up to 65m²

This kit includes the main materials required for fibreglass lining, such as fibreglass mat, surface tissue, top coat, resin, catalyst hardener, putty powder, acetone, rollers and brushes.

Materials required to install mosaic tissue sheets
For a proper installation, you will typically need:
- Printed fibreglass mosaic tissue sheets or motifs
- White top coat for the background colour
- Clear top coat to glue and seal the printed tissue
- Catalyst hardener
- Sanding discs or sanding paper
- Masking tape
- Paint brushes or rollers
- Acetone for cleaning tools and surfaces
- Protective gloves, mask and safety glasses
Swemgat supplies fibreglass top coat in clear, white and other colours:

For printed mosaic tissue sheets, clear top coat is especially important because it is used to bond and seal the tissue sheet without hiding the printed design.
How to install fibreglass pool tissue mosaic borders
1. Plan the layout before you start
Measure the waterline, steps or feature area where the mosaic sheets will be installed. Check the size of the sheets and calculate how many you need.
Always order enough material before starting. Colour variation may occur between batches, so it is better to have enough sheets from the same order than to run short halfway through the job.
2. Prepare the pool surface
The surface must be clean, dry and properly sanded.
If you are working on old fibreglass, sand the area to remove dirt, chalking, old loose coating and any waxy surface layer.
If you are working on new fibreglass that has stood for more than about 12 hours, sand the surface to remove the wax layer before applying the next coating.
This step is not optional. If the surface is not sanded correctly, the new top coat may not bond properly.
3. Apply a white background coat
Apply white top coat to the area where the printed mosaic tissue sheet or motif will be installed.
White is normally the best background colour because it makes the printed design clearer and brighter. Allow the white top coat to dry properly before continuing.
4. Mix clear top coat with catalyst
Mix only the amount you can use before it starts curing.
Top coat and resin must be activated with catalyst hardener. A typical catalyst ratio is 1% to 3% by volume. In hot weather, use closer to 1%. In colder weather, use closer to 3%.
As a simple guide:
- Hot weather: about 10ml catalyst per 1 litre top coat
- Cold weather: up to about 30ml catalyst per 1 litre top coat
Do not skip the catalyst. Without catalyst, the top coat will not cure and harden properly.
5. Apply clear top coat and position the tissue sheet
Brush or roll a thin layer of clear top coat onto the prepared background area.
Carefully place the printed mosaic tissue sheet onto the wet clear top coat. Work gently. The sheet is thin, so do not pull or stretch it aggressively.
Smooth it into position with care, removing wrinkles and trapped air as far as possible.
6. Seal the tissue with clear top coat
Apply clear top coat over the printed tissue sheet to seal it.
Several thin layers are better than one thick, messy layer. Allow drying time between layers as required by the working conditions and the product system being used.
The goal is to fully seal the printed tissue into the fibreglass finish so that it becomes part of the pool lining surface.
7. Mask off and finish the rest of the pool
After the printed pattern has dried properly, use masking tape to protect the border or motif area.
Then apply the main top coat colour to the rest of the pool. White, sky blue and deep blue are common choices, but Swemgat also supplies other colours for more artistic projects.
From a practical point of view, white top coat is often the easiest colour to work with because it does not show fading in the same way as darker or brighter colours.
Where to install mosaic tissue sheets in a pool
The best places to install mosaic tissue sheets are:
Waterline
This is the most popular position. It gives the pool a neat border and helps hide scum marks and waterline stains.
Pool steps
Printed tissue sheets on step edges help make the steps more visible under water. This is both decorative and practical.
Safety edges and shallow areas
A contrasting border can help swimmers see changes in depth or raised surfaces.
Feature motifs
Motifs can be used to create a focal point. This works well on a pool floor, on a shallow step, or in a visible wall area.
Common installation mistakes to avoid
Installing directly onto concrete or marblite
This is wrong. Mosaic tissue sheets must be installed onto a resin-based fibreglass lining or compatible epoxy-painted fibreglass surface.
Not sanding the surface
Top coat needs a properly prepared surface. A shiny or waxy surface can cause poor bonding.
Forgetting catalyst
Top coat and resin require catalyst to cure. If catalyst is not added, the coating will stay soft or sticky.
Ordering too little material
Do not start the job with “just enough” sheets. Always allow extra for cutting, overlaps, mistakes and pattern alignment.
Mixing too much top coat at once
Once catalyst is added, the curing process starts. Mix smaller batches and work steadily.
Using dark colours without understanding fading
Dark and bright pool colours can fade over time. Good water balance helps reduce staining and fading, but it will not make dark colours maintenance-free.
Can DIY pool owners install these mosaic sheets?
Yes, a capable DIY pool owner can install fibreglass mosaic tissue sheets, but this is not a “slap it on quickly” job. You need patience, clean surface preparation, correct catalyst mixing and careful handling of the printed tissue.
If you can sand, paint neatly, follow ratios and work methodically, it is possible. If the pool needs full resurfacing, structural repairs, crack treatment or major relining, rather get specialist advice before ordering materials.

Basic water care after installation
Once the pool is refilled and running, keep the water balanced to protect the pool finish.
As a practical target, keep:
- pH between 7.2 and 7.6
- Total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm
Poor water balance can shorten the life of the finish, encourage stains and make the pool look older faster.
